St. Luke’s is an Episcopal Church. That means that we are part of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. The Episcopal Church grew out of the Church of England and took on its own identity and governance after the American Revolution. Many consider the Episcopal Church to be a bridge or middle way between the Catholic and Protestant traditions. The form of our worship service would be familiar to Roman Catholics and people from other liturgical traditions. At the same time, we are a democratic body, electing our bishops and congregational leaders. We follow the Protestant tradition of empowering lay persons to read and interpret Scripture.

Worship in the Episcopal Church is organized through use of the Book of Common Prayer, a wonderful collection of outlines of services, prayers, the Psalms, and other resources. Episcopalians focus on our worship together, with a willingness to accommodate a variety of theological views. St. Luke’s is part of the Diocese of Mississippi, the gathering of Episcopal Churches within this state under the leadership of our Bishop. At present, our bishop is the Right Reverend Brian Seage.
